In brief

OpenAI's cyber model reaches GovCloud

Daybreak Red, built on GPT-5.6 Cyber, is offered to approved customers in AWS GovCloud (US-East). Access needs enrollment in Trusted Access for Cyber. Humans should review its findings.

OpenAI says its GPT-5.6 Cyber model is now available to approved customers in AWS GovCloud (US-East) through Amazon Bedrock. Here it goes by the name Daybreak Red. We know this from OpenAI's post dated November 4, 2026, checked against Amazon's Bedrock model card.

What it is for

Daybreak Red is meant for authorized vulnerability research, exploit validation and security testing. In plain words: finding weak spots in software, proving they can really be abused, and testing defenses. OpenAI pitches it at government security teams.

What is different

Most general AI models refuse requests that look like attack work, because a defender and an attacker can ask the same question. OpenAI says Daybreak Red gives verified defenders fewer refusals on these tasks.

The trade-off is tighter control. OpenAI points to stronger identity checks, monitoring and access controls.

Data and review

OpenAI says inference data, meaning what customers send to the model and get back, is not used for training. Customers also do not need to share it with OpenAI.

The company also says qualified security practitioners should review findings and proposed fixes before anyone applies them. Think of the model as a fast junior analyst, not the final sign-off.

How to get access

The Bedrock model card says access requires enrollment in OpenAI's Trusted Access for Cyber program. After approval, a request goes to the AWS account team. The card lists support in GovCloud (US-East) with a short context window of 272K input tokens, which is how much text the model reads in one go.

Amazon's wider launch of Daybreak Red and Daybreak Blue on Bedrock says eligible customers can use them, and eligibility requires enrollment in Trusted Access for Cyber from OpenAI.

What is not settled

The dates disagree. OpenAI's post is dated November 4, 2026, while some third-party write-ups and an AWS reference date the GovCloud availability to October 30, 2026. No independent reputable report covers the GovCloud expansion itself. The AWS blog on the broader launch was written by a partner and lists only US East (Ohio) in its region list. Access is limited to approved customers, so most readers cannot try it.
