Microsoft said GitHub is reworking how software gets built for what it calls the agentic era. The word comes from a post on Microsoft's Source blog, shared on LinkedIn on 28 October 2026.

An agent, in plain terms, is an AI system that can plan steps and use tools to finish a task, rather than just answer one question.

The post points to the SDLC, short for software development life cycle. That is the path code takes from idea to planning, writing, testing and release.

According to the post, GitHub shared many updates the same morning at its Universe event. Microsoft framed them as part of one redesign of that path.

The excerpt gives the headline claim and little else. It names no products, features, prices or release dates.

Imagine a team that wants a bug fixed. In the agentic idea, an AI helper could take part at several stages, not only while the code is typed. That is an illustration, not something the source describes.

For now, the useful takeaway is direction. One of the biggest code platforms says AI agents are meant to be part of the whole process.

The source does not list the updates, say who can use them or show any test results. Details will have to come from GitHub's own announcements.
