ChatGPT in Chrome learned to read your open tabs and act on them for 7 million users
OpenAI updated its Chrome extension on October 15, 2026, and says the standalone Atlas browser is gone, though sources differ on plans and browsers.
In brief
ChatGPT can now see all your open Chrome tabs
OpenAI updated its Chrome extension on October 15. In Work mode it can fill forms, send messages and group tabs. The store lists about 7 million users.

OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome so the assistant can see the tabs you already have open. The update was announced on October 15, 2026, in posts from the official ChatGPT account on X, and reported by Unite.AI and Chrome Geek.
What it does
ChatGPT can now look at your open tabs and, in Work mode, take actions in Chrome for you.
Once the extension is installed, you can tag Chrome inside the ChatGPT web or desktop app. ChatGPT then uses your open tabs as context for its answers.
OpenAI's demo shows a simple case. Imagine three sofa pages open side by side. You ask ChatGPT to compare them, and it reads all three.
In Work mode, OpenAI's agent for longer tasks, ChatGPT can also control the tabs. It can send messages, fill in forms, download files and group tabs. The Verge, as relayed by Chrome Geek, likens this to Google's Gemini auto browse feature.
The sidebar and the numbers
The Chrome sidebar now offers the full ChatGPT, with your entire conversation history. You can ask questions in Chat or hand jobs to Work while staying on the page you are reading.
Unite.AI says the Chrome Web Store lists the extension at about 7 million users, updated October 15. Its listing says ChatGPT will always ask permission before using browser history, or before downloading or uploading files.
Examples OpenAI gave
- Fill in a registration form from an event brief, stopping before submission.
- Move vendors from open tabs into a comparison sheet with pricing, features and source links.
- Compare contractors across tabs and draft an email to the best one.
- Fill in a dentist form and add the appointment to work and personal calendars.
Background
The standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser is discontinued, according to The Verge via biztoc and Unite.AI. OpenAI is putting its browser features into the extension instead. OpenAI's guide says ChatGPT can act on sites where you are signed in, such as Gmail, LinkedIn or Salesforce, so checking its work before anything is submitted is sensible.
Where sources disagree
On browsers, Chrome Geek and an OpenAI-linked guide say Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi also get tab features, with Opera lacking side chat. Windows Report describes the update as Chrome-only.
On plans, Unite.AI says OpenAI's documentation lists all ChatGPT plans. PiunikaWeb says Work needs at least a Plus subscription, yet also reports a rollout to free and paid tiers. OpenAI notes that availability can depend on rollout and workspace settings.
No OpenAI blog or help page was found; the first-party source here is the ChatGPT account's post on X. The sources do not show how reliably the agent completes tasks.
