OpenAI recently detected and shut down a campaign aimed at stealing proprietary data from its artificial intelligence models. This technique is known as model distillation.

In this process, an attacker queries a powerful AI to gather its responses and reasoning patterns. They use this information to train a smaller, cheaper copycat model that mimics the capabilities of the original without having to build it from scratch.

OpenAI disrupted a campaign to extract protected model reasoning and is strengthening defenses against adversarial distillation.

OpenAI stated that the attempt involved a coordinated effort rather than isolated user activity. The company identified the patterns behind these requests and implemented security measures to prevent further extraction of model secrets.

Defending against these campaigns remains a challenge because attackers aim to capture the "logic" of the model rather than just its output. OpenAI continues to update its defenses to ensure that its intellectual property remains protected from unauthorized duplication.

How do you think companies can best protect their creative work when it involves complex software that is designed to answer questions?
